Roller Derby

For my first concept idea I was going to make a logo for a rollar derby team. It wasn't long until I moved on to a better idea so I didn't put much thought or research into this concept. I have a sketch of a skate I was sketching while pondering on this idea.

Mcnamara/Troy Advertisement

I've been watching a lot of nip/tuck lately, which is about two plastic surgeons that grew their own business together called Mcnamara/Troy. They didn't have any advertising for their business and were loosing potential patients to another surgeon in town who did have advertizement so I came to the idea of creating a competing ad for the mcnamara/troy business. I drew a couple sketches, but didn't get much into it so decided to keep thinking of different concept ideas.
Notes

For my final project I painted an advertisement to get people in the mood to prepare for a zombie apocalypse by painting a zombie version of Uncle Sam with the words "I want you for the zombie apocalypse!" printed in red underneath. I have emphasized line and color. I have emphasized line with psychic line, a bold contour line and gesture lines and color by mainly using a tetrad colot scheme consisting of red, green, blue and orange. I was mainly inspired by the Walking Dead and noticing how the idea of a zombie apocalypse has lately been very popular throughout media and it seems to be a good concept that attracts everyone lately.

Designer's Statement

If you knew me as I grew up, you would know that I was always doodling and sketching in my sketchbook. The main thing I remember about taking art classes throughout middle school and highschool is that I was never part of the class, I was always in the back because my teachers were letting me create my own art classes. I'm in love with creating art and unlike math and science, I am happy with putting time and effort into my creations and have fun while doing it, that's why I am a designer.

Pattern and Texture

Pattern and Texture
Pattern is a repeated design, it can imply a texture, but texture itself is associated with the sense of touch. Texture is the feel of the surface.

Emphasis and Focal point is a technique used to grab viewers attention, it also helps the viewer look closer.
"DeviantART: More Like Emphasis - Isolation by ~W1ZK1D." DeviantART: More Like Emphasis - Isolation by ~W1ZK1D. W1ZK1D, n.d. Web. 13 Feb. 2013.
Isolation- An item that stands out or is seperated from its surrounding will be easily noticable. A kind of placement.
This examples shows emphasis using isolation by seperating one egg from the others.
"Rockwell Speech - Some Basics - WetCanvas." WetCanvas RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 13 Feb. 2013.
Placement- Where items are in relation to the format and each other can effect emphasis.

In the famous painting, "Rockwells Speech" is praised for the main focus. The artist creates emphasis using placement by placing a man standing up in a seated crowd in the middle also against a dark background helps the subject stand out to the viewer.

"R O N I N." R O N I N. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 Feb. 2013.
Contrast- The point of emphasis by contrast is to create maxium visibility, the stronger the contrast is the more noticable the element is.

In the film, Sin City, uses a achromatic color scheme with a bold red creating emphasis on blood, lips, the title, and the girls dress above.

Individual objects being seen as a whole in unity. Unity is oneness.

Color- When light strikes an object, color is reflected back the the eye. Red, Green, and Blue are the primaries to the addictive color system, which when all three colors are combined it makes white light. Red, Yellow, and Blue are the primaries to the subtractive system, the refers to pigments and dyes.

Color Discord: is the OPPOSITE of color harmony, uses colors from different parts of the color wheel that clash together to create emphasis.
Teal clashes with the orange and red-orange. Teal is not related to either color, lacking color harmony. The color discord is mild so it's exciting rather than unpleasant.
"Twodressesstudio: Split Complementary Color Exercise." Twodressesstudio: Split Complementary Color Exercise. N.p., n.d. Web. 08 Feb. 2013.
Color Harmony- Color relationships based on grouping like complimentary colors, analogous colors and triad colors.
The color harmony is made in this image by using the split compliment color relationship between red, yellow-green, and blue-green.
"Gianni A. Sarcone - E-cards to Send." Gianni A. Sarcone - E-cards to Send. N.p., n.d. Web. 08 Feb. 2013.
Vibrating Color- Colors with equal value and high hue contrast literally vibrate or flicker at the border. This effect is usually conflicting and difficult for the eye to stare at. Vibrating color is stronger with reds more than greens and blues.
The picture above definitely vibrates, almost gives me a headache staring at the image too long.

Value- the term for light and dark.
 "Design Blog." : (16) Value As Emphasis!!!!!! N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Feb. 2013.
Value Emphasis- Creates a focal point within a composition by creating high contrast with light and dark.
There is a noticable high contrast in the girl's face and chest being illuminated by candle light and the other elements in the compostion. Value was used to create the focal point(girls chest and face).
"Danielle Boudet Fine Art." Danielle Boudet Fine Art. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Feb. 2013.
Value in Aerial Perspective- In aerial perspective, value helps create the space between objects by giving closer objects high value and lessing the value the farther the objects go.
The farther the cherries are the less value there is. If all the cherries had as much value as the first closest cherry, there wouldn't be a sense of space.
"Welcome to Foundations in Art." Welcome to Foundations in Art. N.p., n.d. Web. 08 Feb. 2013.
Cross hatching- builds value by layering series of lines over each other to suggest form or value.
This still life has various values made by the thickness and closeness of the lines, the spaces that have no lines at all easily show the highlights where light is being most reflected. The shadows have dark thick lines very close together.

Illusion of Space: There are different ways to turn something flat into something that appears to have depth and be 3 demensional. Forshortening, overlapping, vertical location, aerial (or atmospheric) perspective, and linear perspective are some different ways to create depth or space. Here are some examples!

"Just a Wallflower." Just a Wallflower. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2013.

Forshortening- A tool used to distort an object into looking shorter than the oject really is.

I really like this example of forshortening, the girl is obviously distorted. Her hand is larger than anything because her hand is the closest to the viewer.

Perspective_by_thiagospyked-d36juaz_large
"Perspective by ~thiagospyked on DeviantART." Perspective by ~thiagospyked on DeviantART. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2013.

Linear Perspective- In linear perspective all the object converge on the horizon line and disappear into the vanishing point. There's one point(one vanishing point), two point(two vanishing points), and three point(three vanishing points). In some cases there's even multi-point perspective.

This is specifically one point perspective, but it's easy to see where the horizon line is and how the train and other objects disappear into the vanishing point.

In aerial or atmospheric perspective the close up objects have more value, color and contour and the farther objects go the more they fade or blur out.

"Marie C Green: Paintings." Marie C Green: Paintings. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2013.

Overlapping- creates depth by positioning objects over one another.

We see that the girl outlined in black is behind the man outlined in red, because he overlaps her.

Illusion of Motion- There are also different ways to give a figure or object that is still, some movement. These are different devices used, figure repeated, figure cropped, blurred outlines and fast shapes, multiple image, and afterimage.

"Heather Ryerson's Blog." Heather Ryerson. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2013.

Figure repeated- used a lot in comic books, figure repeated is best described as a story board.

"130 Kellen Fleener." : 45-Illusion Of Motion by Blurred Outline. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2013.

Blurred Outline- the figure is moving so fast that the outline is lost or blurred.

Shape- Also called form, is a visually precieved area enclosed by other elements of art like line, color, texture, value, ect.
Cat and Mouse
Garvin, Sheri. "Cat and Mouse." Behance. N.p., n.d. Web. 25 Jan. 2013.
Figure and Ground- The positive and negative spaces. Ground being the negative and figure being the positive.
If you look at only the negative space you can spot out a cat and looking at only the positive space we see mice, hence the name cat and mouse.

"Non Objective Hoopla." Nonobjective. Nimr0dsdaughter, n.d. Web. 22 Jan. 2013.
Nonobjective- Not a specific object or form that is recognizable.
Naturalism, Idealism, Distortion
Naturalism- Naturally looks like a refrence.
Idealism- A idea of what perfection is, enhanced version of naturalism
Distortion-An alteration of the natural shape.
